181 RELIGION 8

In the eighth grade religion curriculum, your son/daughter is afforded the opportunity to renew his/her commitment to the Church. The text and class work focuses on : Catholic identity and the Church’s universal mission in the Gospel, the life questions presented through God’s Creation from a Catholic perspective, the challenge of Catholic values and making a difference in the work, Catholic faith life, Church history and a look at the future life with God through the vision of the Lord’s prayer. 
 

282 / 281 LANGUAGE ARTS 8 (Academic & Advanced)

Language Arts 8 continues building the students’ understanding of grammar, conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling) literature, reading comprehension and interpretation, vocabulary (use, spelling) and writing skills by developing a relationship through different genres of literature and vocabulary with the students’ writing. This course will be taught 5 days a week. The Power Plus Program is continued. Summer reading is required.
 

283 READING 8 (Academic & Advanced)

This course provides students with an opportunity to further their reading experience. Reading selections are both individualized and assigned.
 

381Level 4ALGEBRA 1 HONORS90+ in Pre-Algebra
 1 creditTeacher Recommendation

Algebra 1 serves as a basis for future mathematics courses. Students are shown proper symbolism and language used in algebraic work. The course includes a study of properties of real numbers, equalities and inequalities, absolute value, polynominals, factoring, functions, fractions, decimals, operations with integers, radicals and exponents, and graphing in the coordinate plane. A summer workbook is required.
 

385 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA Pre-Algebra

This course expands upon the topics dealt with in Pre-Algebra to better prepare students for Algebra I. Major topics of study include properties of real numbers, percents, exponents, and radicals. Solving equations, linear equations, and applications of algebra are also topics of study. Polynomials, statistics, and probability are introduced, as well as linear equations in the coordinate plane.
 

482 / 481 SOCIAL STUDIES 8 Academic & Advanced

Students will continue to build a strong foundation in U. S. history following the political, economic and social developments of the nation throughout the 19th century with a detailed study of the Civil War era, the labor movement and late nineteenth century social reform and early 20th Century up to World War I.
 

581 PHYSICAL SCIENCE Advanced   Teacher Approval

This class for upper-level students embraces the study of Matter and Energy. First semester covers topics in Chemistry, while second semester concerns itself with Physics topics. Students will be involved in regular laboratory work, problem-solving, an end-of-the-year project and out-of-class reading and reporting in addition to class coverage of the subject matter. Laboratory period required.
  

582 PHYSICAL SCIENCE Academic

This is an introductory course to the physical sciences. In the first semester, Chemistry, students will learn about matter and the changes it undergoes. In the second semester, Physics, students learn the principles of motion, force and energy. There will be regular laboratory work. Students will be introduced to problem solving using experiments. Laboratory period required.
 

808 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The junior high program is a combination of team and individual sports and activities. It is a progressive learning experience. Aerobics are introduced through some activities such as aerobic exercise or jogging and jump rope. Also introduced at this level is weight training. Writing assignments are given each quarter.
 

767 LITURGICAL ENSEMBLE

Students who currently play musical instruments are encouraged to participate in the Liturgical Ensemble. The ensemble will meet weekly to prepare instrumental selections, solos and accompaniment for liturgies.
 

750 JUNIOR HIGH CHOIR

Junior high choir is offered to seventh and eighth grade students. Choir meets to prepare music for school liturgies. Students focus on proper singing techniques including proper warm-ups, posture, breathing, and tone production. Junior High Choir meets one day per cycle.
 

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS

Instrumental lessons will be offered to any interested student. Lessons will include any band instruments or piano. Students will be scheduled one period per week and when advanced enough, will join the ensemble in accompanying for school liturgies.
 

805 HEALTH 8

Junior high health is a course in basic health concepts. Primary areas of emphasis include dangerous substances, personal care, nutrition, interpersonal relationships, first aid and emergency care. Also included are CPR testing and AIDS education. Students will take health twice per week for 1 Semester.

In this course the student will learn to identify the principles of design used to organize the elements of art. Each principle is taught and reinforced through hands on production using a variety of mediums and techniques.
 

780 MUSIC APPRECIATION

A study of the elements of music thru active reading and performing on electronic keyboards.
 

880 COMPUTERS 8

A nine-week course designed to give students hands on experience with computers. The course is designed to reinforce the knowledge gained from their 7th Grade computer class. The course begins with a review of the Microsoft Word skills learned in 7th grade. Internet searching skills are reviewed, as students will use the internet for research for various projects. Students will then learn more complicated spreadsheet design and create graphs with their Excel data. Students will also be introduced to Power Point, learning how to set up the slides, and add animation.
